Peony Collection
The Staten Island Botanical
Garden currently has 80 accessions in its Chinese Tree Peony collection.
Chinese tree peonies are derived mainly from Paeonia suffruiticosa.
These are shrubs
that
closely resemble herbaceous peonies but form a woody plant that
can grow between four to six feet in height with flowers ranging
between six to ten inches in diameter. Propagation is by means
of grafting using Paeonia lactiflora or Paeonia officinalis as
rootstock. Peonies like a well drained soil and can tolerate cold
winter conditions.
