On December 3, 1999, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani dedicated a beautiful conservatory to the memory of his friend and colleague Carl Grillo. This 2,800 square foot addition to the Garden's existing greenhouse virtually triples the space for propagation and exhibition of rare and beautiful plants as well as increases the Garden's space for its environmental programs. The structure's three zone heating system creates arid, tropical and temperate conditions, which allows for the creation unique horticultural displays. Changing seasonal displays, exhibitions of native and regional plants, and the propagation of rare flowers will become mainstays of the new greenhouse as will the workshops and classes surrounding these exhibits. The Garden has also devoted greenhouse space for the expansion of its elementary education programs. "Discovery Classroom" and "Travelling Gardener," and the newest multidisciplinary program "The School of Eight Treasures" will all benefit from this facility.
