Dogwood Collection

There are about 45 species of tree and shrub dogwood. The small flowers, which come in either white, yellow or greenish white sometimes are surrounded by showy bracts or white, pink or red. The Staten Island Botanical Garden dogwood collection is made up of 20 specimens consisting mostly of Cormus florida, a tree growing to 40 feet, Cormus kousa, a tree growing to 20 feet, and hybrids between the two. The purpose is to show homeowners what types of dogwoods do well in this climate. Many of the hybrids are resistant to anthracnose, a disease affecting varieties of Cornus florida. Dogwoods like a moist well drained soil with plenty of humus.
