Garden of Healing

The statue “Resurrection Day” by international sculptor Silvio Amelio. The statue will be installed in the Garden of Healing when the garden is completed.

Staten Island was one of the most deeply affected communities by the events of 9/11. As a tribute to the 267 Staten Islanders who perished, the Staten Island Botanical Garden is creating a Garden of Healing and 9/11 World Trade Center Educational Tribute to recognize the many service and civilian victims, as well as bring Staten Islanders, New Yorkers and other Americans together to reflect and heal. This project represents a significant partnership between the Garden, local residents, borough leaders, and the members of Rescue 5.

This one-acre Garden of Healing. Located on a forested hillside overlooking 20 acres of officially mapped wetland, the existing site for the Garden of Healing includes mixed hardwood trees (sweetgum, linden oak and maple) and will be enhanced with 100 canopy, 150 understory trees, shrubs and perennial seasonal planting displays. All will evoke the healing power of trees as symbols of life and renewal.
